Date 18 May 2023

Galliford Try's Brixton House Theatre project has won a prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Regional Award for architectural excellence as a landmark arts and culture facility in South London.

The £38m scheme, procured under the Southern Construction Framework, is part of the Somerleyton Road Development Project. The theatre is an intricately-designed building by Edmund Wilson of Foster Wilson Architects, that comprises two flexible main theatre performance spaces with seven studio rooms, a creative hub with a large public café and ancillary accommodation.

The judges praised the ‘all-electric building’ for its robust environmental strategy, that includes, very high levels of insulation, natural ventilation, solar control, and minimal heating requirements. Newly planted trees that add to biodiverse terrace roof planting and for its ‘well-considered teaching and special education spaces that emphasise and support strong community connections’.

Gavin Bridge, Managing Director for Galliford Try Building Southern, commented: “We are delighted that this innovative project has received recognition of this kind.

“It has been a fantastic scheme to be involved with and there is no doubt that Brixton House will become a significant cultural hub for the surrounding community. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
