Galliford Try's Brixton House Theatre project has been highly commended at the Civic Trust Awards, which recognise outstanding architecture, planning and design in the built environment.

The £38m scheme, procured through the Southern Construction Framework (SCF) and in partnership with London Borough of Lambeth, is part of the Somerleyton Road Development Project.

The theatre, designed by Foster Wilson Size Architects, comprises two flexible main theatre performance spaces with seven studio rooms, a creative hub with a large public café and ancillary accommodation.

The judges praised the design as a “harmonious fusion of modern aesthetics and practical functionality” and that the attention to detail was “evident in tactile-relief signage, adjustable environmental controls, and consistent placement of outlets” resulting in a “cohesive and user-friendly environment”.

Last year, the Brixton House Theatre project also won the prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Regional Award for architectural excellence as a landmark arts and culture facility in South London.

Gavin Bridge, Managing Director for Galliford Try Building Southern, commented: “We are delighted to receive this recognition. Brixton House is a cultural cornerstone for the surrounding community, and I congratulate everyone involved in this great project."

Announcing the awards, the judges commented: “Brixton House transcends the traditional definition of a theatre. It embraces sustainability and accessibility, showcasing a commitment to the arts and the people it serves.”
